This was great fun! I love riddles. Can you believe it took me three reads to figure out the identity of the "gangly creatures"? (Must be because I'm short..)

I like owls (and this haiku) so I was very disturbed when, during research into the Mayerling Affair I discovered that the number of owls hunted and killed between 1849-1909on Austrian Monarchy estates was recorded as 17,747.

Well, after having their seats handed to them over the prior few centuries by Frederick II and then by Napoleon, they probably figured that owls would be more appropriate opposition.

Ah Frederick, "guard decisive points only" - my soccer players knew that maxim well.
